How God Answers the Five Core Issues
1. The Issue of Existence and Coming into Being
The basic tenet of Christianity—that God exists outside our physical realm—answers the question of existence and coming into being (Genesis 1–3). He is the external source who brought everything into being: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). This truth is confirmed in Hebrews 11:3: “By faith we understand that the worlds (universe, ages) were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” In other words, the universe and everything in it did not simply appear out of nothing. Rather, they were created and fashioned out of constituents imperceptible to our natural senses. God, who transcends this material universe, created all that we see out of the invisible.
Common sense and logic confirm this: in our physical world, things do not just appear. Someone beyond this realm must be responsible for the universe and all existence. Scripture explains how: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being” (John 1:1–3). The same truth appears in Colossians: “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him” (Colossians 1:16). Christianity rejects the notion of random or illogical appearance of matter and life. God, who transcends this realm, brought everything into being.
2. The Issue of Life
The question of life is answered in the book of beginnings: “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). Thus, man is not a mere product of biological systems. Instead, it is life within man that animates these systems. God did not simply offer life to mankind—He Himself is life, and all life flows from Him: “For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself” (John 5:26). John also testified of Jesus: “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men” (John 1:4). Jesus further declared: “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” (John 11:25). Here He points to the reality of life beyond our physical existence.
James 2:26 teaches that “the body without the spirit is dead.” This shows there is a spirit in man, which gives life to his body. And all life flows from God, His Word, and His Spirit: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life” (John 6:63, see also John 5:26).
3. The Issue of Order and Purpose
The precise order in nature and in our universe, along with the laws of physics that govern the operation of our world, is not the product of randomness, as attested to by the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This order in nature and our universe points to an ultimate purpose: “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands” (Psalm 19:1).
We also read in Proverbs 16:4: “The LORD has made everything for its own purpose” (Proverbs 16:4). And the whole duty and purpose of man is to fear God and keep His commandments (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
