In fulfilment of what was spoken

…This was to fulfill what had been spoken… (Matthew 2:15)

The opening Scripture and similar verses which are found in many places in the Bible bring to bear a truth that is firmly established in the Word of God. “This was to fulfill what was spoken” doesn’t quite sound like “that which was bound to happen did take place” – rather, something had to happen in order for that which had been spoken to come to pass. Here is truth: There are some things that are never going to be reality in our lives until we agree with God and speak forth His Word, or the things in line with His Word, into reality in our lives. When we do, God will Himself change the course of events to ensure that they line up with His Word which we have spoken, events which otherwise wouldn’t have happened had we not put His Word in our mouth. Joshua wasn’t merely commanded not to let the Scriptures depart from his heart (Joshua 1:8), but rather his mouth in order for him to make his way prosperous and have good success in all he did.

Jesus put it this way, “…for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you” (Matthew 17:20). This scripture reveals an attribute of faith: “If you have faith, you will say…”i.e. faith makes you say something, and this is in connection to nothing becoming impossible unto you. Therefore, it is not the true faith that prevents you from speaking the word of God, but a dumb one. So we are instructed to hold fast the profession or confession of our faith without wavering; for He is faithful that promised (Hebrews 10:23). We read in 2 Corinthians 4:13 that “It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak”. This evidently makes it clearer that the Bible kind of faith speaks. What then does it speak, if not the Word of God, and the things in line with His Word (see Romans 10:8- 10). Where there is faith, there is speaking, and the proof and delivery of your faith is made evident in the things you say. Jesus again said in Luke 17:6 “If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and be planted in the sea’; and it would obey you (Luke 17:6)”. Notice that, nothing is bound to obey you until you speak as a result of your faith in God.

The truth is that we are all going to say a lot of things today, and over the course of our lives. Why don’t you just make a habit of saying what God is saying? We are told not to be foolish, but to understand what the will of the Lord is (Ephesians 5:17). His will encompasses all the promises He’s made in His Word to you. Why don’t you put that in your mouth today so that you will make your way prosperous and have good success in all you do? Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and you are going to eat the fruit of the things you say (Proverbs 18:21). If you speak doubt, unbelief, death and carnality that’s exactly what you are going to get if you don’t repent from speaking such words. But if you take your stand on the Word of God and declare what His Word says about your life, family, and your world, it will also be said of you that in order to fulfil the word which you spoke, God moved.
