Creation itself proves that there must be a source external to it for creation to exist. Even common sense demands this. The very existence of the definite and precise order by which the universe and earth function—and the very existence of life itself—requires an external input and cause. To ignore these obvious truths and claim that all creation and existence are products of random chance, while also claiming to rely on science or reason, contradicts your very claim. Indeed, as Scripture says, it is the fool who says in his heart, “There is no God.” (cf. Psalm 14:1).
1. The Issue of Existence and Coming into Being
Nothing comes from nothing. No material matter just appears in our physical earth and universe; someone or something has to put it there. For those who claim the big bang theory: where did the initial or primordial matter come from that started it all? Where did the heat and energy come from, which caused the explosion? Why there is something rather than nothing demands a cause. Even common sense must dictate that there has to be a source external to our physical universe and life on earth for anything to exist.
2. The Issue of Life
Consider this strange concept called life. Where did it come from? Nothing comes from nothing! Beyond biological activity, where did the amazingly strange thing called life come from, which powers biological systems, causes the body to function and makes it alive (having biological activity)? You can have two healthy bodies, one full of life, the other dead, yet with no reason or cause of death compared to the other body—proving that ability to have life and consciousness and to exist is external to the body that contains it.
If life were merely a function of organs and biological systems, then two bodies with identical biological conditions would always either both be alive or both be dead. But that is never the case. While science can study life, it can only do so as a “thing” or phenomenon that already exists—it has no explanation for its ultimate source.
This vital force that animates the body and can depart from an otherwise healthy physical form demands an explanation. This non-physical thing called life—granting existence, consciousness, personhood, and personality, with powers of creativity and ingenuity—clearly points to a source external to the body that contains it.
3. The Issue of Order and Purpose
Not only do we have matter and life in our universe, obviously from an external source since nothing comes from nothing, but the placement and organization of matter in living things, our bodies, the earth, and the universe is not random. It is arranged with definite and precise order. As science testifies, order begets order, and chaos begets chaos. There must be an external source influencing a system for order and fine-tuning to occur. The laws of science confirm this.
The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that the entropy (disorder) of any isolated system always increases over time—disorder is the default, while order requires energy and external input to maintain. Common sense affirms this in our own lives, societies, nations, and in how we manage nature and the environment. Things do not just fall into place the way we want without clear vision and a definite plan – a specific order.
Complex order does not self-generate. However, as we observe in our universe and life on earth, this complex order leads to an end goal or purpose—causing the universe to function and life to exist as it does. Order has the function of revealing purpose.
The existence of an external source causing matter and life to exist with perfect order—from the subatomic level to cellular structure, to complex human life and the universe—clearly points to purpose. This order necessarily implies purpose; otherwise, chaos would have prevailed. But life and our earth’s systems are not chaotic—they are amazingly fine-tuned.
Evidently, the external source that caused all this to happen did so with purpose, as demonstrated by the perfect order that has been brought into being. An external source is required for order to take place. The order in the universe and in our lives unmistakably points to that source.
4. The Issue of the Realm of Thoughts and Emotions
Consider the realm of thoughts, love, hate, will, care, and emotions—things that go beyond the physical, beyond what can be touched. Where did they come from? Again, nothing comes from nothing—these must have a source.
If we claim that thoughts and emotions are merely the result of electrical activities in the brain or the release of hormones, where do these electrical charges/activities and hormones originate from—along with the non-material realities they produce? These intangible aspects of human experience point to something beyond mere matter.
5. The Issue of Moral Objectivity
Almost every thinking person has a sense of what is good and evil—murder is evil, the violation of others is evil, while love and care are good. Where did these things come from? Where did their categorization into “good” and “evil” originate? The existence of a moral sense and a conscience that justifies and condemns points to realities that transcend our physical universe and senses.
Almost every thinking person has a sense of what is good and evil, and things we can all broadly agree on, such as murder being evil, violation of others being evil, love being good, and care being good. Where did these things come from, and their categorization into good and evil? The existence of a moral sense, and conscience that justifies and condemns, points to realities that transcends our physical universe and senses.
Undeniable Fact
These five issues undeniably points to the existence of an external source. They do not just point to “something out there” but to a source with specific knowable characteristics: transcendent, powerful enough to create universes, intelligent enough to design complex order, and personal enough to create consciousness and emotions. This is the same observation and truth what Paul wrote about two millennia ago: “What may be known about God is plain to them, for God has shown it to them [mankind]. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and divine nature, so that they are without excuse (Romans 1:19-20). We shall delve deeper into the characteristics of this External Source, and how how this Source addresses these Five Issues, giving meaning and purpose to Life, in the next post.
